Vertigo, Dizziness, Dizzy, MenieresIf you suffer from vertigo, you probably worry about the next time the spinning sensation will strike. While vertigo itself may not be dangerous, it can be a disconcerting feeling, and it can interrupt one’s day. Of course, it quickly can become dangerous if an attack occurs at the wrong time such as while driving a car or working high up on a ladder. What can be done to help with vertigo?

Traditional Medical Approaches to Vertigo

For many years, it has been believed that vertigo is the result of a problem with the fluid inside the ear. There are times when this is a problem. For example, when a person has an ear infection, vertigo may be a symptom. However, vertigo often presents with no perceived ear issues.

Because of the preconceived notion of vertigo always starting from the ear, most doctors will prescribe something to lessen the amount of fluid in the ear. Some may even recommend certain exercises to “reset” the inner ear. One doctor even came up with the idea of doing a somersault in a certain way to relieve vertigo. While these methods have provided benefits to some, for many others vertigo becomes an ongoing concern.

Upper Cervical Care for Vertigo

Another area to look when it comes to vertigo is the upper cervical spine, the C1 and 2 vertebrae. A misalignment here can have a drastic effect on the vestibular system, the system by which the body maintains balance and determines location. As a result, it is common for vertigo to occur following a head or neck injury, sometimes a number of years later because the misalignment causes damage gradually.

In a study involving 60 patients with vertigo, all 60 patients responded well to upper cervical chiropractic care. At least 56 of the patients had suffered a head or neck injury before the symptoms began. After care, 48 of the patients saw their vertigo go away completely, and the other 12 saw vast improvement. We strive to provide our patients with similar results.
